INTRODUCTION

There were two terrible wars in the 20th Century which involved several countries in different continents.

The world war 1 was fought during 1914-1918, which divided the world into two parts - Allied and Allies. Allies nations were Great Britain, France and Russia, who won the world war 1. The defeated nations were the allied that included Germany, Japan and Italy. World War 2 involved almost all the nations of the world in its span of more than 6 years.

It was estimated that about 50-70 million people were killed in the war. That is more than the population in our country! World war 1 was one of the main causes of the world war 2...

You are going to be a journalist investigating about these two wars, you are going to dig in the most interesting facts of the last century and know the principal characters involved in the wars. You will try to understand its causes and see the different points of view that lead to those conflicts.

The main question I want you to reflect upon is this: Was Spain involved in these two wars? If so, how? And most important, why was/wasn´t?

THE TASK

You are going to do some activities that will improve your knowledge about the two world wars and its causes. Also you will learn some very interesting facts concerning age and gender in war, and why children in England have to move from London and other main cities to the countryside. An the end of the task, you will be ready to know which countries were involved in these wars and why, so you will be ready to answer the main question.

✔     You will complete different activities (maps, conceptual maps, biographies).

Read and reflect on it to adopt a posture and defend it on a class debate.

Look for information in English in the Internet.

Identify the main facts you are required in a text.

Discover controversial facts about war to form your own opinion and write a short articles about it.

Learn the role of women in war and .

Uncover the real role that Spain had in the 2nd world war.

THE PROCESS

Have a look at these maps and complete the next activity:

Adopt a posture and defend it:

You are going to be divided in 4 groups in class. You´ll read this links to websites and with that information you will have to take parts in both bands to understand what lead to those wars and defend both postures in class. 2 Groups will defend the allies and the other 2 the allied.

Don´t try and understand everyword, just get the main ideas. You can use a web traslator if you find it very difficult, but anyway, we will work these readings in class so no-one is behind.

Express a personal point of view:

Read this real story and visit the following links in the wikipedia. Also, interview someone in the family that lived in that period of time, to know if they participated in a war (it could be the civil war) and tell you about their experiences. Then, write a short paragraph answering to this question: Why do you think some soldiers lied about their age to join their armies?

      Write an essay!

World war I was called “A War to End All Wars”(1914-1918) but that didn´t happen and it all repeated itself again some years later. With all the information about these wars and reflecting in how such a thing of a war can happen you will have to write an article named: “How to avoid world war III”.

"We must remind future generations what happened in 1936-1945, so that we will not make a wrong step again, so that our sons will have a chance to live."

- Wing Commander Guy Gibson

Read about the role of women in the wars and complete the activity:

So many people in World War Two (1939-1945) had many dangerous duties to carry out and performed task on par with men during this period. Here's a look at some of the courageous women in WW2:
